When I was a little girl, living with my family in India, I loved to go the market with Ayah. The village market was a glorious adventure, a sensory onslaught.
Seen through the diaphanous shelter of Ayah’s sari, my heart and mind absorbed the heady and wondrous tangle of colour, scent, smell, sound and movement. The craftsmanship in every carving, the swirl of pattern in rich fabric, the flash of exotic jewelry, all left a lasting impression. The texture of life, I discovered, was in the details.
Born into a family that moved a lot, change, travel and discovery has become part of my dna. As a result, I am happiest exploring a new neighbourhood, an undiscovered landscape or a country on the other side of the world. In any destination, I seek out markets because they offer a glimpse into everyday lives of the people who live there, and reflect their history, geography and culture in the food, arts, crafts and wares.
Each experience imprints a memory and an insight, connecting me to our infinite expressions of individuality – the details – that make up the collective whole.
